I am interested in the presence of real estate ads in Brooklyn’s public spaces, which commodify a privatized lifestyle in contrast to their diverse, fluctuating public surroundings. In these paintings, my use of car interiors as framing devices suggests the rapid pace of development and a resulting feeling of detachment from the surrounding environment. It also suggests parallels with suburban car culture. "Brooklyn Lyceum" combines contemporary and historic imagery of 4th avenue in Park Slope/Gowanus, including old real estate ads, formerly-stalled contemporary real estate developments; historic local buildings; and old photos of the neighborhood including construction on the Gowanus/BQE.
