PS 226 Animal Leadership Totems

Painted through the STARR after-school program, with students in grades 4-6 at PS 226 in Midwood, Brooklyn. For this mural, students discussed qualities of a good leader, as well as animal symbolism in the art of different cultural groups--specifically, we looked at hybrid animal masks and totem poles. Students worked in small groups to create their own "animal totems" combining more than one animal, to symbolize different leadership qualities or ways to benefit the school community. Students also worked together to design a composition that combined all the animal totems along with the school's mascot, the panther.
